Knee Replacement Surgery - Its Types & Post-Op Care. Dr. Manu Mengi
Knee replacement is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring a knee
damaged by arthritis. The procedure is done by removing damaged cartilage and
bone in the knee joint then artificial bones and joints are fixed. Today not
all patients having knee pain will have to go for a surgery if at all the cause
of the pain is clearly identified.
This treatment is not cheap, in India it ranges from RS.75000 to 1
Lakh depending on the type of surgery; time spent in the theater and surgeon
charges. So a surgery is recommended only when the damage is in its last stage
or when the bones are touching each other which would have caused the wear and
tear destroying the cartilage between the bones. This causes for efforts to try
and preserve the natural joint.
Partial Knee Replacement
It is a surgery that may be considered for the treatment of
Osteoarthritis of the knee joint. The advantage here is that a small cut is
made and recovery period is too fast, whereas total knee replacement, all
cartilage is removed from the knee joint through a big incision.
Gender Specific Knee Replacement
It is a technique where Implants are designed in a similar way,
except that the average is different from a man's or a woman's bone. The
purpose of this is to allow better function and durability of the joint.
Custom Knee Replacement
In this case, an MRI is taken prior to the surgery and custom
cutting guides are made for the patient. This helps the surgeon to remove and
replace the exact bone.
Rotating Knee Replacement
The rotating Knee Replacement Surgery in Mohali not only
helps in swinging back and forth, but also helps in rotating inwards and
backwards because a normal knee joints rotates less.
Joint Replacement surgery is becoming common
today, but when should you get a Joint surgery?
Lap and hips replacement is on increase due to different reasons
but a good orthopedist should be consulted and then further action taken.
X-rays have to be taken and also the cause of pain explained and in addition
the period of the problem otherwise a natural knee joint should be kept well.
It is worth considering if your knee is damaged by arthritis and the pain
,stiffness have a serious effect on the patient and his or her day to day
activities, so replacement should be a last resort if no change is experienced
by the patient.
Post-Operative
Care
Someone may be given specific exercises, advised to take short
walks, climb stairs and carryout normal household activities.
Most people who have artificial laps are above the age of 55
though the procedure can be done on any young person.
